About SAGA

Saga is an annual musical festival organized by Royal College School Development Society. It was introduced as a musical show in 2004, under the patronage of the Principal Upali Gunasekara. This event has grown through the years as to attract crowds from all over the island.

“Saga” which has become a brand name now has been recognized as one of the most celebrated musical entertainment in Sri Lanka.

  • 2004

    We were born in 2004

    The chief organizers of Saga I in the year 2004 were the principal Upali Gunasekara, the hostel warden and Mr. Ashoka Pushpakumara. The name “Saga” was proposed by Mr. Aruna De Silva, based on the legendary Greek poet Homer’s works, Odyssey and Iliad, which are considered to be ‘sagas’ in English Literature.

    Saga II

    Held on 6 th November 2005 at BMICH. The Chief guests were Mr and Mrs R.B.Darmadasa and Mr.K.Dayapala.

  • 2006

    Saga III

    Was held @ BMICH . Pandith W.D.Amradewa, Amarasiri Peiris, Victor Rathnayake, Kolitha Banu Dissanayaka,Devika Mihirani, Vijaya Nandasiri, Richard Manamudali,Sooriyakumar Muththalage,Kasun Kalhara,Uresha Ravihari and Amanda Gunathilaka performed.

    Saga IV

    Held at BMICH. The Chief guests were past principals of the college , Mr.S.Sooriyarachchi ,Mr.S.H.Kumarasinghe and Mr.L.Gomes

  • 2009

    Saga V

    The cheif guest was Mr. Lalith Weeratunga , Secretary to His Excellency the President. Saga V was cancelled mid-show in the wake of LTTE attacks on Colombo and was held again as” Saga 5 Plus” in April 2009.

  • 2010

    Saga VI

    It was held on the eve of 175th Anniversary of Royal College in the year 2010. The main theme for that year’s show was the changes in music that had taken place from 1835-2010.

  • 2012

    Saga VII

    Changed its location to newly opened “Nelum Pokuna” theatre . Amarasiri Peiris, Samitha Mudunkotuwa,Athula Adhikari,Dushyanth Weeraman,Naadro with Rakitha Wickramarathna are among the invited artists. Mahinda Bandara (Veteran Guitarist) and D.D.Gunasena(Veteran violinist) were awarded with “Abisankara Prasadini”.

    Saga VIII

    Got the Endorsment from Ministry of Education Services. Rakitha Ruwan Wickramarathna,one of the best percussionist in Sri Lanka who was a member of orchestra in Saga I,II & III appointed as Brand Embassador. Awarded “Abisankara Prasadini” to Tissasiri Perera(Veteran Keyboard player), Kalani Perera(Veteran violinist) and Hemapala Perera( Veteran flutist).

    Saga IX

    The nineth edition of the “Musical Legend of the East and West” brought many talented individuals and groups onto a very special stage and as always, entertained the crowds beyond expectations at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

    Saga X

    The long wait is over. Saga X, the 10th Anniversary show of the musica legend of east and west will be staged on 12th November 2016 at the Sugathadasa indoor Stadium
